What Is Large-Format Porcelain Stoneware and Why Has It Become the Leader of Modern Renovation?

Choosing the finishing materials for floors and walls is a strategic decision that determines the aesthetics, durability and upkeep cost of a space for years ahead. Recently the undisputed leader among premium solutions has become large-format porcelain stoneware (often marked as XL, XXL tile). What makes it better than traditional collections, and what challenges does it pose for craftsmen and owners?

First, let us define the terms. Tile with a side of 60 cm or more is considered large-format. The most popular sizes today: 60×120 cm, 120×120 cm, 60×60 cm, 75×150 cm, 120×240 cm, 160×320 cm and even larger. It is no longer just a floor covering but a universal material for walls, facades, countertops and even furniture. Advantages of large-format porcelain stoneware:

Seamless space and a “continuation” effect. A minimum of joints is the main feature. It visually enlarges the room and makes it monolithic, clean and elegant. The absence of a network of joints does not interrupt the pattern of natural stone or wood, creating a whole picture. This is especially valuable for open-space, small rooms, lobbies and living rooms.

High durability in use. Thanks to high-pressure pressing and high-temperature firing (above 1200°C), porcelain stoneware acquires almost diamond hardness. It belongs to the highest wear-resistance class (PEI V), which makes it ideal for high-traffic places: shopping centres, airports, offices, as well as home kitchens and corridors. It is resistant to scratches, impacts and abrasion.

Incredible design variety. Digital (ink-jet) printing lets it reproduce the texture of natural marble, granite, onyx, wood, concrete and metal with photographic accuracy. On a large tile the pattern does not repeat, creating the effect of a natural material.

Hygiene and easy care. A minimum of joints means a minimum of places for dirt, bacteria and mould to accumulate. The dense structure of the material does not absorb moisture and contamination. The glazed surface is easily washed with ordinary products and is resistant to acids and alkalis.

Eco-friendliness and safety. As a product of natural clay, sand, feldspars and natural mineral pigments, porcelain stoneware is completely safe for health and the environment. It does not release volatile compounds, is not radioactive and is hypoallergenic.

But where there are advantages, there are also serious challenges. What are the main difficulties connected with?

The key difficulty is installation. Classic laying methods “as usual” do not work here and lead to catastrophic consequences: cracks, peeling, tile that “moves”, a hollow sound. Let us go through the main requirements:

A perfectly prepared substrate is 90% of success. The permissible deviation of the floor plane is no more than 1-2 mm per 2 metres of length. For comparison: under laminate 3 mm per 1 metre is acceptable. Any pit or bump will lead to an “air cushion” under the tile. Under load (furniture, walking) the tile will play like a trampoline and sooner or later crack. So the first step in M-STONE’s work is a thorough diagnosis of the substrate with a laser level.

Special materials. What is needed is not just adhesives but highly flexible adhesive mixes of class C2ES or C2TES. The letter “S” means resistance to slipping (important for walls), “E” means increased deformation capacity, “T” means thixotropy (does not slide on a vertical surface). An ordinary cement adhesive does not compensate for the internal stresses of a massive tile and the micro-deformation of the building.

A professional tool is indispensable. Working with large format requires:

A vacuum gripper. To lift and carry tile weighing 40-70 kg safely.

A tile levelling system (TLS). Special wedges and clamps that let you set all the tiles in a perfect plane without edge differences.

A powerful electric tile cutter with a diamond blade for a straight and clean cut.

A mixer for mixing adhesive, a laser level, notched trowels with a 10-15 mm comb.

Experience and teamwork. The weight and size of the tile require the skills and coordinated action of two or three craftsmen. Incorrect adhesive application (incomplete filling), wrong placement of expansion joints, violation of the grouting technology: all of these are mistakes with a very high price.
