Installing Large-Format Tile in a Living Room and Hall: Creating a Dream Space

Ілюстрація до статті: Монтаж великоформатної плитки у вітальні та залі: створюємо простір мрії

The living room is the heart of any home, the place where the family gathers, guests are received and the best moments of life are spent. Choosing the right flooring for this room matters not only aesthetically but also practically. Installing large-format tile in a living room and hall is a solution that combines elegance, durability and functionality. M-STONE offers professional services for laying porcelain stoneware and natural stone that will turn your living room into a true masterpiece of interior art.

Why is large-format tile an ideal choice for a living room?

Advantages of large-format tile in residential rooms

Large-format tile of 60×60 cm to 120×240 cm and larger is becoming ever more popular in modern residential interiors. For a living room such a choice has a number of advantages:

Visual widening of the space. Large tile formats create the effect of a seamless surface thanks to fewer joints. In a living room of 20-30 square metres, instead of 100-150 tiles of standard format you will have only 20-30 large-format slabs, which visually enlarges the room and makes it more spacious.

Easy care. Fewer joints mean fewer places for dirt and dust to collect. In a living room, where guests are often received, people walk barefoot or children play on the floor, this is especially important. Large tile just needs wiping with a damp cloth, and the floor looks perfectly clean.

A modern and elegant look. Large-format tile gives the impression of a monolithic surface, which fits modern trends of minimalism, Scandinavian style, hi-tech and loft perfectly. The surface looks whole, seamless and prestigious.

Durability and wear resistance. Quality porcelain stoneware or natural stone (marble, travertine, onyx) serves for decades without losing its appearance. The tile does not fade in the sun or wear away, bears the weight of furniture, and is not afraid of moisture or temperature changes.

Compatibility with underfloor heating systems. The living room is an ideal place for underfloor heating. Porcelain stoneware has excellent thermal conductivity, so the heating system works efficiently, providing a comfortable temperature in the room.

Aesthetics and design possibilities

Large-format tile opens up boundless possibilities for living room design. You can choose:

  • Marble-look porcelain stoneware with a characteristic vein pattern reminiscent of real Italian Calacatta or Statuario. This creates an atmosphere of luxury and elegance.
  • Concrete-look or metal-look porcelain stoneware for industrial loft style or urban minimalism.
  • Travertine: a natural stone with warm beige, cream and walnut shades, creating a cozy, natural atmosphere.
  • Backlit onyx: an exclusive solution for accent areas in the living room. Backlit onyx panels create a magical play of light and shadow.
  • Matt or glossy surfaces depending on your preferences: matt tile is practical and not slippery, glossy creates a mirror-shine effect.

The process of installing large-format tile in a living room: stages of work from M-STONE

Stage 1: consultation and a specialist’s visit to the site

Every M-STONE project begins with a detailed consultation. Our specialists come to your home in any district of Kyiv (Pechersk, Shevchenkivskyi, Holosiivskyi, Obolon, Podil, Solomianka, Sviatoshyn, Desnianskyi, Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi districts) to assess the site.

What we do during the visit

  • We measure the area of the living room and hall and take into account the configuration of the room (niches, bay windows, columns).
  • We assess the condition of the existing base: a concrete screed, a wooden floor, old tile.
  • We discuss your wishes regarding the format, colour and texture of the tile.
  • We show samples of materials, supplier catalogues and a portfolio of completed work.
  • We give recommendations on the best choice of material, taking into account the load, the features of the interior and the budget.

The consultation is free: we value your time and aim for long-term cooperation.

Stage 2: preparing the base for large-format tile

A perfect base is the key to the durability of the surface. Large-format tile needs especially careful surface preparation, because any irregularities, dips or bumps will lead to voids under the tile, which can cause it to crack or delaminate.

What base preparation includes

  • Removing the old covering (if needed). We remove old parquet, laminate, linoleum and tile. We work carefully without damaging the base.
  • Assessing the condition of the concrete screed. We check the floor level with a laser level. Permissible differences for large-format tile are no more than 2-3 mm over 2 metres of length.
  • Levelling the base. If there are significant differences (over 5 mm), we make a new cement-sand screed or use self-levelling mixes. For wooden bases we fit gypsum fibreboard (GVL) or cement-bonded particle board.
  • Waterproofing (if necessary). If the living room is on the ground floor of a private house or there is a basement beneath it, we always apply a waterproofing layer.
  • Priming the surface. We apply a deep-penetration primer to strengthen the base, improve the adhesion of the adhesive and reduce the water absorption of the concrete.

Preparation takes from 1 to 3 days depending on the condition of the base and the area of the room.

Stage 3: choosing the adhesive mix and grout

For large-format tile we use specialised adhesive mixes of class C2 (increased adhesion) or S1 (flexible adhesive). Among the proven brands: Ceresit, Knauf, Mapei, Weber, Sopro.

Criteria for choosing the adhesive

  • Tile size: for formats from 60×60 cm we use adhesive with strong fixing and thixotropic properties (it does not run down vertically).
  • Type of base: for unstable or wooden bases we choose flexible S1 or S2 adhesive.
  • Underfloor heating: the adhesive must withstand temperature fluctuations.

Grout for the joints: for a living room we recommend epoxy grout (Litokol Starlike, Mapei Kerapoxy) or high-quality cement grout (Ceresit CE 40, Mapei Ultracolor Plus). Epoxy grout costs more, but it is completely waterproof, does not yellow, does not absorb dirt and is ideal for light interiors.

Grout colour

  • To create the effect of a seamless surface, we choose grout matching the tile.
  • For contrasting solutions (for example dark tile + light grout), we emphasise the geometry of the laying.

Stage 4: laying the large-format tile

Installing large-format tile is delicate work that demands experience, professional tools and thoroughness.

M-STONE tools and equipment

  • Laser levels for controlling the level.
  • Tile levelling systems (TLS): wedges and clamps for perfectly even joints.
  • Professional tile cutters for large-format porcelain stoneware.
  • Vibrating suction cups for safely moving heavy slabs (a single 120×60 cm tile can weigh 30-40 kg).
  • Notched trowels of various sizes (for 60×60 tile we use a 10-12 mm tooth, for 120×240 a 12-15 mm one).

Laying technology

  • The tile layout. Before work begins we lay the tile out dry to determine the best pattern and symmetry and to avoid small trimmed pieces in visible places. In a living room it is important that the central area is symmetrical.
  • Applying the adhesive by the ‘pull-off’ method. We apply adhesive to both the base and the tile (the double application method) to ensure 100% coverage and avoid voids.
  • Laying the tile. We carefully place the tile on the adhesive and use a vibrating suction cup to distribute the adhesive evenly. We check the level of every tile with a laser level and a straightedge.
  • Fitting the TLS. Levelling systems (DLS, Rubi, 3D Krest wedges) ensure the same joint thickness (usually 2-3 mm for large formats) and do not let the tile ‘wander’ while the adhesive dries.
  • Checking there are no voids. We tap every tile with a rubber mallet; the sound should be dull and the same across the whole area.
  • Adhesive drying time. After laying we observe a technological break: freshly laid tile must not be walked on for 24-48 hours depending on the type of adhesive.

Stage 5: grouting and final finishing

After the adhesive has fully dried (usually after 2-3 days) we proceed to grouting.

The grouting process

  • Cleaning the joints. We remove the levelling clips and clean adhesive residues out of the joints with a spatula or vacuum cleaner.
  • Dampening the joints (for cement grout). We lightly wet the joints with water so the grout sets better.
  • Applying the grout. We use a rubber float or a grouting bag (for epoxy grout). The movement is diagonal so the grout fills the whole joint well.
  • Levelling the joints. We run a special tool (a grouting trowel) over them to create an even and smooth joint surface.
  • Cleaning the tile. 15-30 minutes after applying the grout we wash off the residues with a damp sponge. Epoxy grout must be washed off faster, because it hardens within 10-15 minutes.
  • Final finishing. After 24 hours the tile surface is buffed to a shine with a dry soft cloth.

Stage 6: protecting the surface and care recommendations

After the work is finished we recommend:

  • A water-repellent treatment (for natural stone). Travertine, marble and onyx are porous materials that need protection from moisture and stains. We apply special impregnations (Lithofin, Fila, Akemi).
  • Protecting the joints (for cement grout). A water-repellent treatment prevents moisture and dirt from penetrating the joints.
  • Care instructions. We provide detailed recommendations for cleaning and caring for the surface. For natural stone we do not use acidic products; for porcelain stoneware universal cleaning products are suitable.

Design solutions for a living room with large-format tile

Laying options and patterns

A straight row (the classic way). The tile is laid in rows and the joints form perpendicular lines. A universal option for any interior.

Diagonal laying. The tile is positioned at 45° to the walls. It visually widens the space but needs more trimming and 10-15% more material.

Offset (brick bond). Each next row is offset by half a tile. Ideal for wood-look or stone-look porcelain stoneware.

Book-match (mirror image). Tiles with a pattern are laid symmetrically, creating the effect of an open book. Used for marble-look porcelain stoneware.

Combining formats. Combining tiles of different sizes (for example 60×60 and 60×120) to create a unique pattern.

Accent zones. In a living room you can highlight the fireplace area, the TV area or the dining table using a different colour or texture of tile.

Combining tile with other materials

Porcelain stoneware + wood. A classic combination for zoning a living room: tile in the dining area, parquet or laminate in the relaxation area. The transition is finished with a metal or wooden threshold.

Porcelain stoneware + a rug. Rugs of any shape and size lie beautifully on large-format tile. This adds coziness and softness to the interior.

A backlit onyx panel + porcelain stoneware. An exclusive solution: an onyx wall with LED backlighting becomes the central element of the living room, with a floor of matching porcelain stoneware.

Advice from M-STONE experts

How to choose the colour and texture of tile for a living room?

Light shades (white, beige, light grey). They visually enlarge the space and create a feeling of cleanliness and freshness. Ideal for small living rooms up to 25 sq. m. They suit Scandinavian style, minimalism and the classics.

Dark shades (graphite, black, brown). They add depth, solidity and luxury to the interior. They suit spacious living rooms from 35 sq. m. They are used in loft, art deco and modern classic styles.

A marble-look texture. A universal solution combining elegance and practicality. Marble veining creates dynamism but does not overload the space.

A concrete-look or metal-look texture. For industrial style and hi-tech. It creates an urban atmosphere.

Matt or glossy? Matt shows less dirt, is not slippery and is practical for a living room with children and pets. Glossy reflects light and widens the space, but stains and scratches are more visible on it.

Is underfloor heating needed in a living room?

Underfloor heating in a living room means comfort and coziness, especially in winter. Porcelain stoneware and natural stone are perfectly compatible with electric or water heating systems.

Advantages of underfloor heating in a living room

  • Even distribution of heat across the whole room.
  • No convection air currents (as from radiators), which reduces the circulation of dust.
  • The possibility of walking barefoot even in winter.
  • Savings on electricity compared with other heating systems (provided the thermal insulation is correct).

How to care for large-format tile in a living room?

Daily care

  • Remove dust with a dry soft cloth or a microfibre mop.
  • Damp cleaning 1-2 times a week with a neutral cleaning product.

For natural stone (marble, travertine, onyx)

  • Do not use acidic products (vinegar, citric acid); they destroy the structure of the stone.
  • Use special products for natural stone (Lithofin, Fila, Akemi).
  • Periodically (once every 1-2 years) treat the surface with a water-repellent product to maintain its protective properties.

For porcelain stoneware

  • Universal cleaning products for tile are suitable.
  • For glossy surfaces you can use products with a shine effect.
  • Epoxy grout needs no special care; it is enough to wipe it with a damp cloth.

Removing stains

  • Greasy stains: removed with cleaning products with an alkaline pH.
  • Coffee and tea stains: washed off with warm soapy water.
  • Wine and juice stains: blot immediately with a napkin, then wash off with water.

Frequently asked questions about installing large-format tile in a living room

1. How long does laying tile in a 30 sq. m living room take?

With a ready base, 5-7 working days. If preparation is needed (levelling the screed, waterproofing), an additional 2-3 days.

2. Can large-format tile be laid on a wooden floor?

Yes, but special preparation is needed: fitting GVL or cement-bonded particle board and using S1 or S2 flexible adhesive. A wooden base can ‘wander’, so it is important to ensure stability.

3. What joint thickness is optimal for large-format tile?

For interior tile, 2-3 mm. Joints that are too narrow (1 mm) make grouting harder, and ones that are too wide (5 mm or more) look coarse.

4. Which is better: porcelain stoneware or natural marble?

Porcelain stoneware is cheaper, more resistant to mechanical damage and needs no complicated care. Marble is natural, unique and prestigious, but more expensive and needs regular protection with water-repellent products.

7. Can I order only base preparation or only the laying of tile?

Yes, we carry out separate kinds of work at your request. However, we recommend ordering the turnkey package to guarantee quality at every stage.

Let us sum up: why is installing large-format tile in a living room a profitable investment?

A living room with large-format tile is:

✔️ Aesthetics and style. A modern, elegant look that never goes out of fashion.

✔️ Practicality. Easy care, durability, resistance to wear.

✔️ Versatility. Suitable for any interior style, from classic to hi-tech.

✔️ Hygiene. Tile does not accumulate dust, bacteria or allergens, which is ideal for families with children and for allergy sufferers.

✔️ Increasing the value of property. A quality renovation with natural materials raises the market price of an apartment or house.

✔️ Durability. Porcelain stoneware and natural stone serve for 30-50 years and more without losing quality.
