Laying Large-Format Porcelain Stoneware on Walls: Specifics and Cutting in Kyiv

If the floor is the foundation of an interior, walls of wide-format porcelain stoneware are its soul. In 2026 “seamless” walls dominate the interiors of Kyiv apartments (the Skyline, Jack House and Lypky Tower complexes). A single slab 2700 or 3200 mm high can cover the space from floor to ceiling, completely eliminating horizontal joints.

However, installing an 80 kg slab on a vertical surface is not just finishing but a complex engineering operation. The specialists of M-STONE have prepared a detailed analysis of how we create flawless walls that will please you for decades.

• Preparing walls: geometry and load-bearing capacity

Unlike floors, walls are subject to different loads. When installing heavy slabs (6, 12 or 20 mm thick) the substrate must be not only flat but also have enormous load-bearing capacity.

Plastering to beacons: we do not work with “crooked” walls. The vertical deviation must not exceed 1 mm over the whole height of the wall. We use cement-sand mixes with added polymers to increase pull-off strength.

Mechanical fixing of mesh: if the walls are made of foam block or aerated concrete (a frequent story in new buildings in Solomianka or Holosiivo), we always reinforce them with steel or facade mesh fixed with anchors.

Dedusting and primer: we use “concrete contact” adhesion compounds only in exceptional cases. The M-STONE standard is deep dedusting with Festool vacuum cleaners and applying specialised primers that “eat into” the concrete.

• Design and layout logic: the “Bookmatch” effect

Walls are always in front of the eyes, so every millimetre of the pattern matters here.

Vein matching: when working with marble-look collections (Statuario, Calacatta) we select the slabs so that the natural pattern flows smoothly from one wall to another.

The “Butterfly” effect (Bookmatch): this is when two slabs with a mirrored pattern meet, creating a symmetrical design. It is the highest level of design and requires jewellery-grade trimming of the edges from an M-STONE tiler.

Marking axes: we use 4D laser levels for perfect centring of slabs relative to doorways or the central axis of a living room.

• Secrets of vertical installation

How do you hold a slab weighing a hundred kilos until the adhesive sets?

The “Double Bonding” technique (double buttering): adhesive is applied to the wall and to the slab. Important: the ridges on the wall and the slab must be strictly vertical and parallel. This creates a “vacuum effect” when pressed and prevents the slab from sliding down.

Mechanical fixing: for slabs heavier than 40 kg on walls above 3 metres we sometimes use hidden mechanical hooks.

Vacuum lifters: we do not carry slabs by hand. Raimondi Easy-Move systems let us position the slab with millimetre accuracy, pressing it smoothly to the wall.

Vibration compaction: a mandatory stage. We “tap through” the slab with a vibrating suction cup from bottom to top so that the adhesive spreads evenly over the whole plane.

• Complex cutting and Jolly corners (45°)

Walls in bathrooms or living rooms often have external corners, boxes and niches.

A 45-degree mitre: this is M-STONE’s calling card. We make the mitre on machines with water cooling. After bonding, the corner is finished by hand with diamond “turtle” pads to a state of perfect smoothness.

Holes for sockets and switches: in large format the holes must be perfectly round (without micro-chips), because any burr under load can become the start of a crack across the whole slab. We use only diamond core bits for “wet” cutting.

Walls always cost more than floors, because of the difficulty of holding the weight and the volume of cutting.
