Installing Large-Format Tile in a Bathroom in Kyiv: Waterproofing, Slopes and Secrets of Durability

A bathroom in a modern penthouse or apartment in Kyiv is a relaxation zone where XL porcelain stoneware (1200×2400 mm and larger) creates a sense of wholeness and cleanliness. However, working with such slabs in “wet zones” demands jewellery precision from M-STONE craftsmen. • Total waterproofing: more than just protection

Many people believe that porcelain stoneware does not let water through by itself. That is true, but water will always find a way through micro-joints or junctions with pipes.

Preparing walls and floor: we use two-component flexible waterproofing (for example Mapei Mapelastic or Litokol Aquamaster). It creates a “rubber” membrane that is not afraid of the settling of new buildings in Pechersk.

Reinforcing corners: all internal and external corners, as well as pipe exits, are taped with a special waterproofing tape (such as Mapeband). These are the “critical points” where leaks most often occur.

Water test: before laying tile in shower areas we carry out a “water seal” test: we fill the tray with water for 24 hours to make sure it is absolutely watertight.

• Slopes in shower areas: how to work with slabs

Creating a slope to the drain from 60×60 cm tile is simple, but how do you do it from a monolithic slab 2.4 metres long without cutting it into an “envelope”?

Linear drains: we recommend installing long slot drains along the wall. This allows a one-way slope across the whole slab while keeping the integrity of the stone pattern.

The “envelope” technology: if a point drain is chosen, our craftsmen make a laser cut of the slab into sectors. We do it so neatly that the joints between parts of the slab look like natural veins of the stone.

A barrier-free environment: in 2026 in Kyiv a trend is to install the shower floor flush with the main bathroom floor. This requires filigree work on the screed already at the rough stage.

• Vertical installation and fixtures

The weight of one slab in a bathroom can reach 60-80 kg. Holding it on the wall is a job for professionals.

Class C2 S2 adhesive: in bathrooms with high humidity and temperature changes we use only an adhesive with maximum elasticity. It compensates for the difference in expansion between the tile and the wall.

Hidden hatches: we integrate hidden inspection hatches right into the large-format slab. Thanks to professional opening systems and exact cutting on Montolit machines, such a hatch remains absolutely invisible.

Cutouts for plumbing: every hole for a mixer or an installation button in a slab is a risk. We use diamond core bits with water cooling and templates so that the edges of the holes are perfectly smooth, without micro-cracks that can “creep” over time.

• Epoxy grout: 100% hygiene

In a bathroom cement grout is a breeding ground for fungus after 2-3 years. M-STONE works only with epoxy compounds.

Zero water absorption: epoxy grout turns into plastic that does not absorb water and soap scum.

Easy care: the joints between slabs in your bathroom will stay as bright and clean after 10 years as on the first day after installation.

• Complex 45° corners (Jolly)

We cut the external corners of installation boxes at 45 degrees. This creates the effect of a solid stone cube. We do not use plastic or aluminium corner profiles: only a flawless slab joint finished by hand with diamond discs.
