Professional Installation of Large-Format Tile and Porcelain Stoneware in Kyiv: Technology and Stages

Installing large-format tile (sizes from 60×120 cm to 160×320 cm and more) and porcelain stoneware is a complex technological operation that requires high qualification, special equipment and professional materials. Mistakes at any stage lead to cracks, peeling or deformation due to stress in the slab.

Main advantages of large-format tile:

• A minimum of joints → hygiene, easy cleaning.
• A visual enlargement of the space.
• Modern minimalist design.
• High wear resistance (PEI IV-V for porcelain stoneware).

Substrate preparation: 70% of success

• Checking the plane with a laser level or a 2-3 m straightedge: deviation of no more than 2 mm per 2 m.
• Priming with a deep-penetration compound (2 coats).

Levelling:

• a self-levelling compound (thickness up to 30 mm);
• a self-levelling floor system;
• plastering to beacons (for walls).
• Waterproofing in wet areas (Ceresit CL 51, Mapelastic).

Choosing adhesive and mortar for large format

• Class C2TES1 or C2TES2 (deformable).
• Recommended brands: Keraflex Maxi S1, Litoelastic EVO, Mapei Keraflex Maxi, Litokol Litoflex K80.
• For natural stone (travertine, marble, onyx): an epoxy or polyurethane-based adhesive (Mapei Kerapoxy, Akemi Marmor Kleber).

Special tools for laying large format

• Vacuum suction cups (1-4 pcs, load capacity up to 200 kg).
• A tile levelling system (DTA, Raimondi, Rubi).
• A tile cutter with water cooling (blade diameter 250-350 mm).
• A vibrating machine for settling the adhesive (a tile vibrator).
• A laser level, 3D spacers.

Stages of professional installation

• Marking out (dry laying, choosing the pattern: straight, diagonal, herringbone, modular).
• Applying adhesive with a 10-15 mm trowel (double-application method: to the substrate and to the tile).
• Laying with levelling by means of suction cups and the levelling system.
• Vibrating each slab for 3-5 minutes.
• Filling the joints (width 1-2 mm for porcelain stoneware, 2-5 mm for stone) with epoxy or cement grout (Mapei Keracolor, Litokol Litochrom).
• Final cleaning and protective impregnation (for natural stone: Akemi Nanoprotect, Tenax Idrorep).

Natural stone: travertine, marble, onyx in M-STONE projects

• Travertine is porous, with a warm shade, ideal for living-room floors, terraces, stairs and facades. Outdoors: pools, paths, plinth cladding. Indoors: fireplace surrounds, wall panels.
• Marble is elegant and glossy, suitable for premium bathrooms, kitchen backsplashes, bedroom walls and hotel lobbies. Outdoors: stairs, retaining walls, decorative elements.
• Onyx is translucent and can be backlit, and is used for bar counters, partitions, accent walls and shower areas. Outdoors: rarely, only in protected zones.
