Fatal Mistakes When Installing Large-Format Tile: How Not to Ruin Your Renovation in Kyiv

Installing slabs is the premier league of finishing work. Yet even in Kyiv’s elite houses we often see the consequences of amateurs’ work. M-STONE specialists have collected a “hit parade” of mistakes that lead to dismantling and lost money.

1-3. Preparation and planning mistakes

Laying on a “fresh” screed: concrete must cure for 28 days. Haste means the screed shrinks and the slab does not. Result: a crack along the whole length.

Ignoring the primer: without a quality primer the adhesive gives up its water to the wall too quickly, before it has gained strength. The slab simply falls off.

No layout: starting installation without a “dry” layout in large format is madness. You can end up with an ugly narrow cut in the most visible place.

4-8. Technological violations

Spot application of adhesive (“blobs”): a death sentence for large format. Voids form under the slab. Drop a heavy object on such a floor and the slab will crack.

Using cheap adhesive: large format does not absorb water. An ordinary adhesive cannot “grip” it. You need only an adhesive with a high polymer content (S1/S2).

No levelling system: without one it is impossible to remove the slab’s micro-bow. There will be “teeth” at the joints that you will trip over.

Grouting the next day: the adhesive under a large slab needs at least 3-5 days for the moisture to evaporate. Early grouting seals the water inside, which leads to the tile “swelling”.

Refusing expansion joints: in large rooms (over 25 m2) thermal joints are necessary so that the surface can “breathe”.

9-12. Risks and responsibility

Lifting without special equipment: an attempt by two people to carry a 3-metre slab vertically often ends with it breaking in half.

Cutting with an angle grinder without guides: a crooked cut and chips will spoil the look of the most expensive interior.

No waterproofing in bathrooms: large format does not replace waterproofing. Water will find its way through the joints.

Working without a contract: the main mistake. Without legal obligations you are not protected from defects.
