Substrate Preparation for Large-Format Tile and Natural Stone: Mistakes to Avoid in Kyiv

Incorrect substrate preparation is the cause of 80% of all complaints about laying large format and natural stone. Cracks, peeling, tile “swelling”: all of these are consequences of violations at the preparation stage.

The most common mistakes and how to avoid them

• An uneven substrate Deviation > 3 mm per 2 m → large tile (120×240+) lies “in an arc”, stresses arise → cracks after 3-12 months. Solution: levelling with self-levelling compounds (Ceresit CN 69, Knauf Tribon, Ardex K 15) or to beacons.
• High substrate moisture
• 3% → the adhesive does not gain strength, and stone (marble, onyx) absorbs moisture → stains and colour change. Solution: measuring with a moisture meter, drying with heat guns, waterproofing.
• No waterproofing in wet areas Bathroom, shower, terrace, pool → water penetrates under the tile → peeling. Solution: 2 layers of flexible waterproofing (Mapelastic, Ceresit CL 51, PCI Lastogum).
• Wrong choice of adhesive For stone, an ordinary cement-based adhesive → “efflorescence” and yellow stains. Solution: only low-water, polyurethane or epoxy adhesives (Mapei Kerapoxy, Litokol Litostone K+, Kerakoll H40 No Limits).
• No expansion joints On a floor > 40 m² or in rooms with temperature swings → the tile “tears itself apart”. Solution: joints every 4-5 m, filled with flexible silicone.

Stages of correct substrate preparation (M-STONE)

• Cleaning off dust, grease and old coverings.
• Measuring the plane with a laser + a 3 m straightedge.
• Priming (2 coats).
• Levelling (layer thickness up to 50 mm).
• Waterproofing (wet areas).
• Mesh reinforcement at a thickness > 20 mm.
• Drying for 24-72 hours.
