Onyx in Interiors: The Magic of Light and Stone

Ілюстрація до статті: Онікс в інтер’єрі: магія світла та каменю

Onyx: a stone that glows from within

Onyx is a unique semi-precious stone with an extraordinary property: the ability to transmit light. When lighting is installed behind an onyx panel, the stone begins to emit a soft, mysterious glow, creating a magical atmosphere in the interior. No other natural material can create a similar effect.

M-STONE is a leading expert in installing onyx in Kyiv and Ukraine. Our craftsmen know all the subtleties of working with this demanding material, creating unique interiors that stir the imagination.

The geological nature of onyx

Onyx is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. It forms through the deposition of silica from hot mineral springs in caves and cracks in rock. The formation process takes thousands of years, during which layers of different colour and transparency alternate.

Chemical composition and properties

Chemical formula: SiO₂ (silicon dioxide)

Physical characteristics

  • Mohs hardness: 6-7 (harder than marble)
  • Density: 2.6 g/cm³
  • Transparency: translucent to transparent
  • Lustre: glassy to waxy
  • Cleavage: absent
  • Fracture: conchoidal

A unique property is translucency at a thickness of up to 30-40 mm, which makes it possible to create backlit structures of unrivalled beauty.

Types of onyx by origin
