Installing Large-Format Tile in Kyiv: A Complete Guide from Preparation to Finish
In 2026 interior design in Kyiv has finally cemented the trend for monolithic surfaces. Large-format porcelain stoneware slabs of 1200×2400, 1600×3200 mm and larger are no longer a luxury but a standard for modern apartments in the Taryan Towers, Novopecherski Lypky and RiverStone residential complexes and private residences in Koncha-Zaspa. However, the technical complexity of working with such slabs has grown many times over. M-STONE has prepared a comprehensive installation guide that will help you understand what you are paying for and how to control quality at every stage.
- Analysis and preparation of the substrate: the foundation of your peace of mind
Installing large format begins not with the tile but with an assessment of the substrate. A mistake at this stage is the most frequent cause of cracks appearing 6-12 months after a renovation.
Geometry: the substrate must be perfectly flat. At M-STONE we allow a difference of no more than 1 mm per 2 linear metres. If the screed “moves”, we level it with high-strength compounds.
Moisture (CM method): for Kyiv this is critical, especially in new buildings. The moisture of the concrete substrate must not exceed 2% (or 0.5% for anhydrite screeds). We use professional hygrometers for measuring, because excess moisture trapped under a huge slab will inevitably destroy the adhesive layer.
Adhesion and cleaning: the surface is ground with diamond cups to remove the “cement laitance” and is dedusted with Festool industrial vacuum cleaners. Only after that is a deep-penetration primer applied.
- Choosing the “right” chemistry: why ordinary adhesive is a death sentence
A large-format slab has minimal water absorption and enormous weight. In addition, a building in Kyiv (especially in Pechersk or Podil) is constantly exposed to micro-vibrations from traffic and soil settlement.
Classification S1 and S2: we use only highly flexible adhesives of CLASS C2TE S1 or S2 (for example Litokol K80, Mapei Ultralite S2). The letter “S” means the adhesive’s ability to deform. An S2 adhesive works as a damper, compensating for the expansion of the slab when underfloor heating is switched on or for micro-shifts of the walls.
- Installation technology: tools and precision
Working by hand with a slab weighing 80-100 kg is impossible. Our arsenal in 2026 includes:
Vacuum carrying systems: frames with suction cups (such as Raimondi or Sigma) distribute the load, eliminating the risk of the slab cracking under its own weight when lifted.
Electric vibrating suction cups: after the slab is placed on the adhesive it must be “vibrated”. This is the only way to push out all the air and ensure full contact.
Levelling system: we use reinforced systems that let us align the slabs into a perfect plane without “steps” at the joints.
- Finishing and grouting
The final stage is filling the joints. In 2026 the standard is epoxy grout (Kerapoxy, Litokol Starlike). It is completely waterproof, does not change colour and is not afraid of household chemicals. The joints come out thin (1.5-2 mm), creating the effect of a single stone sheet.
