Top 5 Mistakes with Porcelain Stoneware Facades

Porcelain stoneware facades are a durable solution for buildings in Kyiv and the region, but mistakes can be costly. At M-STONE, with experience in “wet facades” and laying large-format tile, we see typical problems. Let us go through the top 5.

• Incorrect substrate preparation. Without levelling and waterproofing the tile will come off. In areas such as Brovary or Irpin, with a high groundwater level, this is critical. Solution: a reinforced screed + a membrane.
• Saving on materials. Cheap adhesive does not hold in Kyiv’s frosts (-20°C). We use Mapei or Ceresit with F100 frost resistance.
• Ignoring expansion joints. Porcelain stoneware expands in the heat, and without joints it cracks. In our projects on Khreshchatyk street the joints are 3-5 mm with silicone.
• Unprofessional cutting. Chips spoil the look. We use a waterjet cutter for precision.
• No insulation. For “wet facades”: at least 100 mm of expanded polystyrene.
