Laying Porcelain Stoneware and Natural Stone on Underfloor Heating: Rules, Adhesives, Mistakes in Kyiv

Underfloor heating + large format (120×240+) or natural stone carries a high risk of cracking due to thermal expansion. The right choice of materials and technology reduces the risk to a minimum.

Main requirements for underfloor heating under large format

• A low-temperature system (< 28 °C on the tile surface).
• Even heating (cable/mats/film with a pitch of no more than 10 cm).
• Screed thickness over the pipes ≥ 30-40 mm.
• Screed temperature before laying ≤ 25 °C.

Recommended adhesives for underfloor heating (M-STONE)

• C2TES2/S1/S2 with high deformation capacity: Kerakoll H40 No Limits, Mapei Keraflex Maxi S1, Litokol Litoflex K80 Eco, Ardex X 77 Microtec.
• For natural stone: polyurethane/epoxy ones: Ultrabond Eco PU 2K, Kerapoxy Design, Litostone K+.

Technology of laying on underfloor heating

• Heating check: 3 on/off cycles (24 hours each) → no defects.
• Waterproofing + a flexible layer (Mapelastic, CL 51).
• Primer + adhesion bridge.
• Double application of adhesive (trowel notch 8-12 mm).
• Vibrating each slab for 5-10 minutes.
• Joints 2-3 mm, epoxy grout.
• Switching the heating on: not earlier than 7-14 days, gradually +5 °C per day.

Typical mistakes and consequences

• High temperature (> 30 °C) → cracks in stone/porcelain stoneware.
• Ordinary C1 adhesive → peeling after 6-18 months.
• No expansion joints → slabs “lifting”.
• Early switching on of heating → yellowing of marble/onyx.
