Technology of Laying Ultra-Thin Porcelain Stoneware (3-6 mm) on Walls and Floors: The M-STONE Expert Approach in Kyiv

Ultra-thin porcelain stoneware (3-6 mm) means lightness, savings on the adhesive layer and the possibility of installing over old surfaces, but also maximum sensitivity to the substrate, adhesive and craftsman.

Critical requirements for the substrate (tolerance ≤ 1 mm per 2 m)

• Deviation > 1.5 mm → the slab breaks or comes off due to stress.
• Substrate moisture < 1.5% (measured with a moisture meter).
• No voids, cracks or weak areas → tapping and local reinforcement are mandatory.

Special adhesives for thin porcelain stoneware

• Ardex X 78 Microtec, Mapei Ultralite S2, Kerakoll H40 No Limits Eco, Litokol Litoflex K80 Slim.
• Only classes C2TES2/S1/S2 with a deformation capacity ≥ 5 mm.
• Maximum adhesive layer thickness: 3-5 mm (double application is mandatory).

Tools and technique that are indispensable

• Vacuum suction cups with force adjustment (Bohle, Rubi Slim).
• A vibrator with a soft attachment (frequency 5000-8000 rpm).
• A levelling system of 0.5-1 mm (Rubi Delta, DTA Slim).
• Diamond blade 180-230 mm + a guide rail for an exact cut without chips.

Step-by-step technology (expert level)

• 3D scanning or laser marking with an accuracy of 0.5 mm.
• Dry fitting + marking the “beautiful” zones.
• Applying adhesive with a 4-6 mm notched trowel + back-buttering the slab.
• Installing with vacuum, aligning with levelling wedges.
• Vibrating each slab for 4-7 minutes (no less!).
• Joints of 0.5-1.5 mm, filled with epoxy grout (Kerapoxy CQ, Starlike Crystal).
• Cleaning after 45-90 minutes + 2-3 coats of protective impregnation (Tenax Idrorep, Akemi Nanoprotect).
