Backlighting Onyx and Marble in the Interior: Installation, LED Systems, Electrical Safety in Kyiv

Backlighting natural stone (especially onyx) turns an ordinary panel into an art object. But 90% of problems (overheating, yellow spots, peeling, short circuits) come from installation mistakes.

Stone requirements for backlighting

• Onyx: thickness 15-20 mm (light transmission 30-70% depending on the grade).
• Marble: thin (10-15 mm), white/light varieties (Statuario, Calacatta Oro).
• Travertine: rarely, only light varieties with low porosity.

Types of LED systems (expert choice for 2026)

• LED strips 24 V, 14-18 W/m, CRI > 95, 2700-4000 K.
• Aluminium profiles with a diffuser (built into the wall/ceiling).
• IP67 power supplies with a dimmer and surge protection.
• Fibre optics or side LED panels for even light without hot spots.

Technology of installing backlit stone

• Preparing the niche/boxes: depth 80-120 mm, ventilation ≥ 20% of the area.
• Primer + adhesion bridge + flexible adhesive (Kerapoxy Design, Ultrabond PU 2K).
• Positioning the slab with suction cups + fixing with mechanical fasteners (stainless anchors).
• LED installation: adhesive + thermal pads, distance to the stone 30-60 mm.
• Vibration + 2-3 mm joints with epoxy grout.
• Testing for 48 hours continuously + temperature measurement (not > 38 °C).
• Final impregnation with a transparent compound (Tenax Crystal, Akemi Liquid Polish).

Do not entrust backlighting to amateurs: one overheating and the stone is ruined forever.
